  • Description

Te abein. Basket. This is a woven basket, made with an attached lid and side handles. It has been woven into a rectangular form. It is made of four material components: te ira (pandanus leaf) - the red and green kind, te kora and te ira n atu (human hair). The woven form is made from the te ira material in a plain and decorative weave pattern.

Te kora (cordage of coconut sennit fibres) has been encased with woven te ira that has been attached to the base of the basket and runs vertical up the sides to form long handles. The rim of the rectangular form has been blanket stitched with two strands of te kora and dark brown te ira n atu. This also features on the rim of the lid. Some dark brown residue remains on the side of the abein and loose strands of te ira amongst the weave.
