Te utuao

human history
  • Other Name

    Kite (English)

  • Description

Te utuao. Kite. This kite is constructed with a frame of te kaibara (pandanus aerial roots) covered over by baa ni kaina (pandanus leaf fibre), folded and 'sewn' into place with te kora (coconut sennit). The kite is wide and light weight, shaped like an eitei (frigate bird) with additional attachments of a triangular head and forked tail which are both constructed in the same manner as the main body. These are attached to the underside frame of the utuao.

The utuao is natural in overall colour and brittle in some areas. There are holes in the baa ni kaina sheeting in two places and two places in which te kora was used to repair previous tearing. Strings of te kora are incorporated into the utuao which would have been used to control its flight. The kaibara would have been treated and processed to achieve more flexibility to bend into the desired shapes.
