Fragments of a shell disc neck ornament (English)

  • Description

Te mwae teimoone. Fragments of shell disc Neck ornament. This is a bunch or six fragments from a neck ornament. The all feature three material components: te kora (coconut sennit fibre), te nana (coconut shell) and te nouo (cone shell; conus). A pale brown two-ply cord of kora has been used as the band to thread the circular discs of te nouo and te nana. The circular discs are small in circumference, even in depth and have been ground from a larger piece of hard material.

A central perforation has been drilled into the centre for threading onto the series of fibrous bands. The sequence of shell discs are patterned, alternating between off-white te nouo conus discs and mid to dark brown te nana discs. Some of the strands feature a stubbed knot and some have been left loose at the ends. When in the form of a neck ornament, they represent the social status of the wearer who would likely be a man. However it can also be worn by women who have descended from those who it once adorned. The name 'teimoone' reflects the colours of the sea snake.
