i Ula Kitu

human history
  • Other Name

    Throwing club (English)

  • Description

i Ula. Throwing club. i Ula are carved from the rootstock of a hardwood tree. It is intended as a weapon that can be gripped in the hand or thrown in short range distances at assailants. This i Ula consists of a ball-shaped head and long slender handle. A large fissure in the wood of the head is due to the natural formation of the rootstock. The head of the club is carved into a slight peak at its centre. Small holes are visible, possibly due to pest activity.

Cracks in the wood are visible about the sides of the head. The underside of the head is carved flat at the point where the top of the handle meets the head. The handle itself is round in section and has a prominent crack in the wood spanning its length. Eleven notches are incised into the top of the handle. The i Ula is reddish brown in colour and has a glossy patina.
