    Tapa beater (English)

  • Description

    Ike. Bark cloth beater. Used for pounding and producing sheets of masi (bark cloth). This ike was possibly manufactured for tourism. Carved from solid kau (wood). Long and square in cross section with a tapered handle with a rounded butt-end. Four sides, with three sides with grooves spaced approximately 3mm-5mm apart. 1 side is patterned with wave/zigzag patterns that alternate with sections of plain surface.

    Hole through the end of the handle with a leather strap looped through, with the ends of the strap sewn together. Brown in colour.
