Most English flagons from the 17th century onwards have a cylindrical drum. One of the exceptions to this is the ‘York flagon’ They all have a slightly tapering drum with moulded bands or ‘fillets’ at the base and a ‘domed’ lid or cover with a scroll thumbpiece.
Heraldry was first used as a means of identification on pewter in the fifteenth century, but became more common in the second half of the sixteenth century. It consists of either a coat of arms or a crest, sometimes with initials. The quality of engraving is often high. This flagon is engraved with the coat of arms of 'Cotes and Woodcote, Shropshire'.
