Te riri

human history
  • Other Name

    Skirt (English)

  • Description

Te riri. Skirt. This is a skirt made from te kakoko (young, white, central leaf of the coconut palm). When laid out flat it is rectangular in shape and flat in form. It features a two-ply te kora (cordage of coconut sennit fibres) that extend from the top right and left corners. When the garment is wrapped around the wearer’s waist the cords can be used to fastened te riri together.

A mass of very thin te kakoko pinnules have been knotted from the waistband and would hang vertically when worn. It has been detailed with a looped strand of te kakoko, forming a border across the top of the waistband. Three different lengths of knotted kakoko make up the layered mass of te riri. The width of the pinnules in the middle layer are slightly wider than those featured on the base and top layer. The entire te riri appears to have been dyed as a whole garment after being made. It has been dyed a dark brown colour.
