Te bure

human history
  • Other Name

Neck ornament with an egg cowrie shell (English)

  • Description

Te Bure. Neck ornament with an egg cowrie shell. This is a neck ornament that features a large bure (egg cowrie shell; amphiperas ovum). These types of shells are considered rare and used for other body adornments such as bure n aonibai (arm ornaments) that would be worn for the ruoia dance. Te bure is bulbous in form, off-white in colour and smooth in surface texture. Small transparent brown spots dapple some parts of the surface.

It features a short spire where the opposite end presents an interior canal. The aperture of the bure is narrow. Its interior shows a pale orange tone with a surface layer of dried white residue. The inner lip curves inwards with a soft serrated surface. A circular perforation has been drilled through the mid section of the inner lip where it is visible on the exterior. A two-ply cordage of light brown kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage) has been threaded through the perforations forming a knot, two large loops and two loose ends. Bure shells are considered valuable possessions.
