This is a hand held tool made of three components: the iku (skin) of the baiku (stingray; dasyatidae), a rectangular form of wood for the handle and te kora (coconut sennit cordage). The iku feature small bumps of varied heights in tones of ivory and tan brown. Small incisions have been made along the sides of the iku where golden brown 2-ply te kora has been threaded through. The iku would have been soaked in order for it to be pulled over the rectangular wooden handle and lashed taut with te kora, becoming hard in the form it has been stretched over. The handle is of a mid-brown colour. Small cavities are present at the cross sectioned end that has been covered in iku and nicks across the exposed handle end.WāhiNonouti/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiAccession Number1940.3Rā Tāpiringa1940Tohu Tuakiri Kē25149.1 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Te iku; 1940.3; 25149.1; Cultural Permissions Apply Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1940.3, 25149.1Takenga ā-AhureaKiribatiKohingaMaudeKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiNonouti/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiRāPre 1940Tikanga Waihangacarved woodcarving lashedWaitohu/mākaDEP.; 25149.1; GILBERT IS (handwritten)Pāohowood/plant materialsennit/cord (fiber product)[fish]/skin/animal materialRaraunga Ine220mm30mm10mmHuinga KaupapaTools and Implements/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūRaspFile, WoodworkingWoodworking T&E04 Tools & Equipment for MaterialsWhakahounga o Mua30 Nov 2018 Tūemi e whai hononga Ngā hua o DigitalNZ Page 3 Advertisements Column 1 (Wanganui Herald, 23 June 1906) National Library of New Zealand E Tarotaro Moari Mauke, No Te Peu Ta Rekareka.
