    Fish hook (English)

  • Kupu whakaahua

Te matau. Wooden fish hook. This large fish hook is made from te ngea (ironwood) and comprises two individual pieces of wood that have been lashed together with te kora (coconut fibre cord). This type of matau was used for deep sea fishing; for catching sharks and other big fish. The first piece, which accounts for a large portion of the fish hook, has been carved from a branch of te ngea that has a naturally curved form appropriate for the objects intended use.

The second component is a sharp pointed tip that has been tightly lashed with te kora string to the curved end of the first piece, completing the fish hook. The top of the matau has also been bound to fasten a thicker piece of te kora cordage that combines three two-ply strands rolled together and further reinforced with an additional wrapping of a thinner two-ply kora around it where it connects to the hook. This thick kora has come undone at the ends but would have been used to attach a te ao (fishing line) to the hook. The wood is dark brown in colour and smooth-surfaced with some natural furrows, cracks, and abrasions on its exterior, including a section on the pointed tip where the surface has been scraped away.
