Shark rattle. This fishing implement is made for the specific purpose of attracting sharks in the water. The kawaruwaru is submerged in the water by the fisherman and rattled to emit sounds to attract the sharks. The kawaruwaru consists of three large cassus reefa shells, each perforated at one edge and suspended with a cord of thickly plaited te kora (coconut sennit) and strengthened with metal wire joined together at one final end. The shells have extra perforations in the surface. Water flows through the extra perforations which also help to create sound underwater. The shells are white in colour while the kora is dark brown in colour.WāhiNonouti/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiAccession Number1940.3Rā Tāpiringa1940Tohu Tuakiri Kē25162.2 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Te kawaruwaru; 1940.3; 25162.2; Cultural Permissions Apply Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1940.3, 25162.2Takenga ā-AhureaKiribatiKohingaMaudeKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiNonouti/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiRāPre 1940Tikanga Waihangadrilled plaited polishedWaitohu/māka25162.2 GILBERT IS.
