    Neck ornament of coconut shell discs (English)

  • Description

    Te mwae. Neck ornament. This te mwae (Neck ornament) is made of te nana (coconut shell) and small buuro (shells) all strung on a long and fine length of te kora (coconut sennit) then tied off in a knot at the ends.The nana are ground and polished into flat round discs each measuring approximately 5mm in diameter and perforated at their centre. The small buuro are approximately 10mm in length. The buuro are interspersed in a pattern in between five to nine nana.

    The nana are naturally dark brown in colour while the buuro are off-white in colour. The string of te kora is light brown in colour.
