    Neck ornament (English)

  • Kupu whakaahua

Te mwae. Neck ornament. This is made of te kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage), te nana (coconut shell) and te buangui (whale teeth). A very fine two-ply kora has been used to make the neck band. Small circular discs of te nana have been ground and drilled with central perforations where kora has been threaded through. Te buangui is small in size.

The root end of te buangui are cylindrical in form with a bulbous mid-section and then a curved tapered point for the exposed tooth end. Some of the tooth pendants show fractures and missing fragments. They are off-white and pale yellow in colour, hard in material and feature linear crevices vertical to its form. Each tooth pendant has been separated by three te nana shells forming an alternating pattern throughout the neck ornament. The mwae (Neck ornament) has been left unfastened. The kora extensions at the end of the mwae are long in length. An extended length has been tied onto one end.
