Neck ornament of porpoise teeth. It is made of two material components: wiin te kua kewe (porpoise teeth) and te kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage). A twisted cord makes up the neck band. The ends have been knotted to prevent the fibres from unravelling. Each strand of the twisted cord has been utilized to thread a single wiin te kua kewe and then intertwined to perceive a double layered look. The roots of the teeth are matte and a dark off-yellow colour with shallow internal cavities. The exposed pointed and curved ends of the teeth are polished and off-white in colour. They are double layered along the neck band. Small perforations have been made with a shark toothed pump drill into the roots of the teeth for te kora to be threaded through. This type of neck ornament can be worn by either men or women at any time.WāhiNonouti/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiAccession Number1940.3Rā Tāpiringa1940Tohu Tuakiri Kē25209.1 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Te ririko; 1940.3; 25209.1; Cultural Permissions Apply Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1940.3, 25209.1Takenga ā-AhureaKiribatiKohingaMaudeKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiNonouti/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiRāPre 1940Tikanga Waihangadrilled wovenWaitohu/māka25209.1 (handwritten) 25209.1 (handwritten) 25209.1; NONOUTI; GILBERT IS.; DEP; MAUDE; TTT.9 (label, stick on/label)Pāohosennit/cord (fiber product)coconut (fibre)/plant fibre/natural fibre/fibreporpoise/sea mammal/mammal/tooth/boneRaraunga Ine660mm23mmHuinga KaupapaAdornment/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Men/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Women/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūOrnament, NeckBody AdornmentOrnamentPersonal ArtefactsWhakahounga o Mua30 Nov 2018 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
