  • Kupu whakaahua

Te katau te tumara. Waist ornament of poliuices shells. This katau (waist ornament) is made from te ira (pandanus leaf), te kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage) and te tumara (poliuices shells). Te ira has been used to form the woven serrated base of te katau. Two rows of te tumara have been positioned horizontally across te katau. Te tumara are off-white in colour, feature short spires, large belly's and an aperture to match.

There surfaces are polished and portray a slight transparency. They are all similar in size. Holes have been bored through the exterior of the belly part where kora has been threaded. A thin length of ira has been used to tack the lengths of threaded tumara onto the woven base of ira. The direction of the tumara face one way with their spires pointing outwards on an angle and their aperture covered by the woven base. There is some fragmentation across the fibres upon the woven belt. One end shows an extension of te kora and the opposite features two. It has been left unfastened. Te katau te tumara would be worn across the waist for ruoia dance by women and young girls.
