Waist ornament. Ornamental girdle. This is a girdle made to be worn around the waist by women. It is made of te kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage), te nana (coconut shell) and te nouo (cone shell; conus). The kora is mid brown in colour and has been used to thread a series of small circular discs of te nana. A section of the threaded dark brown te nana has been divided by two off-white circular discs of te nouo creating an alternating pattern across the length of te katau. The discs vary in circumference and matte in surface texture. A small circular perforation has been drilled into the centre of the discs where the kora has been threaded through. It has been fastened in one place and left with a short selvege of te kora. It is very long in length.WāhiOcean Island/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiAccession Number1940.90Rā Tāpiringa1940Tohu Tuakiri Kē25472 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Te katau; 1940.90; 25472; Cultural Permissions Apply Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1940.90, 25472Takenga ā-AhureaKiribatiKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiOcean Island/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiRāPre 1940Tikanga Waihangadrilled woven [handmade] [handwoven]Waitohu/māka25472; OCEAN IS.; PRES.; T.M.PLAYFAIR (label, stick on/label)Pāohosennit/cord (fiber product)coconut (fibre)/plant fibre/natural fibre/fibre[coconut shell]/shell (plant material)/plant material[Conus]/shellRaraunga Ine3200mm10mmHuinga KaupapaWomen/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūOrnament, NeckBody AdornmentOrnamentPersonal ArtefactsWhakahounga o Mua30 Nov 2018 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
