    pendant, reel

  • Description

reel. Four notched ridges. Perforated, drilled from both ends, slightly off-centre. Reel is oval in cross section. On 1 side the notched ridges are interrupted by a longitudinal groove (lashing groove) which extends over the edges towards the drilled hole. Three pairs of paua shell circles, between 7-8 mm diameter, are set into the concave area inside the outer ridges, approximately equidistant around the circumference.

These are probably a later addition as the notched ridges are reduced in width to accommodate the circles. The circles are set into holes 3 mm deep with flat bases. One paua circle is missing. The central drill hole has elongated at each end adjacent to the lashing groove. One outer ridge chipped and damaged
