James Watt settled in Auckland in 1840. He is recorded as Auckland’s first jeweller, watchmaker and seal engraver, establishing his shop and living quarters in Shortland Crescent, later Street, in August 1841. It is said that the eight-day movement was made by Watt as an apprentice piece in Scotland. The case was made in Auckland. The clock was displayed in his shop window and became Auckland’s first town clock.
