  • Description

    Te bwara te tarawa. Fishermen's hat. This is a hat made of te ira (pandanus). It is formed like a circular pyramid. The exterior is made up of wide pinnules of te ira that have been tacked together with thread of a similar pale yellow colouring. The interior is made up of another layer: a plain woven mat of te ira. A thick wire has been used to create the frame for the rim.

    The selvedge of the te ira strips have been folded over the metal rim and then stitched down with thread. Where the te ira has been tacked on the exterior, longer stitchs from this can be seen on the interior. A small segment of the rim exposes the metal inlay and where the rust has stained the surrounding te ira. This style of hat would be worn by fishermen to sheild their eyes from the sun.
