Tao hoka ika

human history
  • Other Name

    Spear (English)

  • Description

Tao hoka ika. Fishing spear. This tao hoka ika is made of composite materials. Two ulu tao (spear heads) of dark brown kieto (ebony) are lashed securely to one end of a long cylindrical rod of akau (wood), which is reddish brown in colour, with fibre and pulu (braided coconut sennit) of a medium brown colour. The wooden shaft is slightly bowed in profile and reduces slightly in width towards the base.

The two ulu tao create a double-pronged V-shape effect at the head of the tao. Each ulu tao is straight in profile, sharpened at each point and grooved in a fakanifonifo (serrated) technique along the outward facing side.
