Te reeree

human history
  • Other Name

    Sword (English)

  • Description

Te reeree. Sword. This reeree is made from the following materials: wii ni bakoa (sharks teeth), kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage), kanni (coconut wood) and ira (pandanus leaf). A long length of the kanni has been cut, carved and filed to feature a handle and long spatulate styled blade. The ira has been used to encase the handle and finish just below where the blade starts. It has been secured and lashed down with a thick length of the kora.

The extent of the blade features drilled cavities along the side all the way to the end where the blade has been tapered into a point. A ridge has been left down the centre of the blade upon both sides. Polished and clean wii ni bakoa has been drilled to feature circular perforations at its base. Each one has been positioned upon the side cavities and lashed down with the kora. Both sides show missing wii ni bakoa and broken lashing of the kora. The end of the point portrays a hackle of the ira that has been wrapped around and secured with a lashing of kora.
