Souvenir booklet to commemorate the official opening of Tapeka carved meeting house at Waihi, Lake Taupo

documentary heritage
  • Description

This carved meeting house was built as a resting place for people who visit the Lake Taupo district. The present building replaces Tapeka house which stood on the same site.

The name 'Tapeka' has acquired an apocryphal significance and today, to members of the Ngati Tuwharetoa tribe, it symbolises the tribal spirit of dedication at the altar of Maori hospitality and friendship.

This symbolism ... was personified in the ... paramount chief Te Heuheu II, who on important occasions, wore a toga-like taniko(tapeka)."
