More than eighty vintage photographs, many previously unseen, are reproduced as taonga and as works of art. They offer differing levels of interpretation : as snapshots of Maori history, an illustration of the story of New Zealand photography, or as a springboard to issues of race and exploitation. Subjects include Maori Kings, famous guides, Maori in London and group images in town and country. While awkwardness in constructed poses is evident, the humanity of the people transcends sterotypical perceptions. Photographers include Elizabeth Pulman, Josiah Martin, Alfred Burton and Una Garlick.
