A dictionary of the Maori language

documentary heritage
  • Description

By 1965 the fact that the sixth edition of William's "Dictionary of the Maori Language" was out of print was obviously hampering the development of the study of the Maori Language. Hence, the Department of Education's Advisory Committee on the Teaching of the Maori Language turned its energies to arranging for a reprint and accordingly set up a subcommittee with Professor Bruce Briggs, Mesdames E. B. Ranapia and M. Penfold, and Mr M. R. Jones as members.

Pei Te Hurinui Jones was invited to joint the subcommitte and, at the initial meeting held at Taumaranui on 30 April 1966, was elected to the chairmanship.

In the final proof-reading stages of the dictionary Dr P.W. Hohepa and Mr W. Parker joined in the work of the Advisory Committe on the Teaching of the Maori Language.--preface
