Memorial for Sir James Carroll. Speech in Maori on the disposal of Maori land. Swailes Ltd Printers [Notes on Union Catalogue by Te Puna state "Edited by A.F. McDonnell."]

  • Subject Notes
    CARROLL, James, 1857 - 1926
Ngati Kahungunu; farm worker, interpreter, politician
Carroll aimed at empowering Maori within modern economic life and securing their equality with Pakeha. He accepted that the burgeoning flow of settlement would not be denied access to undeveloped Maori land, especially in the central North Island, but he sought a place for Maori to lease land and use the revenue to invest in their own farming, just as settlers did. To this end he opposed Crown pre-emption, which denied Maori landowners full access to the market and left them exposed to manipulative Crown land agents paying derisory prices.
