Published anonymously but known to have been written jointly by W.L. Williams and Sir William Martin. This is presumably the work referred to in a letter to Donald McLean from the Inspector of Schools, A.H. Russell, dated 13 March, 1872. The letter mentions that Archdeacon Williams and Sir William Martin were compiling a series of books to assist Maori students to learn English, the first of which would be ready for the press in a couple of months.
