After serving in the First World War as a combatant soldier, he [K.T. Harawira] returned to New Zealand and studied for ordination as a minister of the Church of England. In World War II he was the first "padre" of the Maori Battalion. On his return to New Zealand he was appointed to the staff of the Auckland Vocational Guidance Centre and became the first Maori Vocational Guidance Officer.
He holds the "A" Grade Maori Interpreters' License and has been for several years Examiner for Auckland University College in Oral Maori. He has placed particular emphasis on correct pronounciation.--foreword
