    "Captain Erskine, in 1849, sailed from Russell, New Zealand, and reached Niue or Savage Island. He visited Manua, Tutuila, and Upolu of the Samoan Islands. Next, Vavau, Lifuka, and Tongatabu were visited, then Fiji, the New Hebrides, New Caledonia, and Port Jackson" - Hill. Erskine includes vivid descriptions of the Pacific islanders he encountered.

    The color plates depict "Girls and Man of Uea - Loyalty Islands"; "Maunca, Chief of Tutuila, Samoan Islands" and "Thakombau, Tui Viti, Chief of Feegee"; "Man of Tana, New Hebrides" and "Chief of Vate, New Hebrides"; "Inferior Chief of New Caledonia" and "Naisilini, Chief of Mare, Loyalty Islands."
