The formation of vegetable mould, through the action of worms, with observations on their habits

documentary heritage
  • Description

This was Darwin's last book, and reverts to his earliest geological interests. It was remarkably successful, selling faster than the ORIGIN OF SPECIES. Darwin had commented that he corrected the sixth and seventh thousand.

While it was a return to Darwin's earlier interests on geology, ecology and animal behavior it nonetheless continued the theme common throughout his most famous and controversial works that gradual changes over long periods of time can lead to large and sometimes surprising consequences.
