He konae aronui : Maori proverbs and sayings

documentary heritage
  • Description

The aim of the compiler of this little work is not so much to produce an exhaustive record and study of Maori proverbs and sayings, as to produce a booklet which will be used in all Maori schools and colleges.

If the children could commit to memory even a quarter of the sayings included and carry them with them throughout their lives, they would be considered cultured men and women, for proverbs epitomize the thinking of a people.

It is the essence of a proverb to be succinct and pithy.--Preface.
