Dr. Edmund Andrews, a vice-president of the Chicago Academy of Sciences, spent a sabbatical leave in Tahiti. His lifelong hobby was philology and etymology. *Dr. Andrews and his wife became interested in the Tahitian language ... The Board of Scientific Governors of the Academy agreed with Dr. Andrews that this comparative dictionary would be of inestimable value to all American and British Scientists who might work in the South Sea Islands and decided it should be published by the Academy.
