    This collection was compiled with two main aims in view. Firstly to confine the material to texts which can be readily understood by a competent Maori speaker without a specialist's knowledge of esoteric lore and historical tradition, and secondly to include a wide variety of subject matter illustrated by texts ranging from the earliest periods to contemporary times. . .

    The examples chosen were selected because they are typical of their respective types and because recordings of them have been made available by "The Maori Purchases Trust Board" or by the "Folkways and Service Corporation" New York.
