Lamont was an American trader and beachcomber who visited some of the more remote Pacific islands. After voyaging to Tahiti and the southern Cook Islands where he made numerous acerbic comments about the activities of missionaries he headed to Penrhyn Island which is 845 miles north north-east of Rarotonga and the most remote of the Cook Islands. The brig " Chatham " was wrecked on its reef and Lamont and the other survivors were captured and became involved in the tribal warfare of the atoll. In his captivity and voyaging, Lamont became one of the keenest of observers of life and customs of the Pacific islanders in the nineteenth century. His captivity might have been tolerable as he acquired three wives during the year he spent on Penrhyn (Tongareva or Mangarongaro).
