Marble Art Ltd.

documentary heritage
  • Description

Marble Art Ltd. was the business established in 1957 in Wellington by John Fotiadis, the uncle of Lucien Rizos, who in 1951 emigrated from Romania, through Greece, to New Zealand. The exhibition concerns a Marble Art Ltd catalogue printed in Tirgu-Jiu, Brancusi's Romanian hometown, that documents wares from chess sets to coffee tables that draw upon motifs from many civilisations.

Rizos' reconstruction of Marble Art Ltd's catalogue details a 1970s Romanian view of New Zealand-conceived wares designed to appeal to a European market. The publication includes a contribution by Damian Skinner. The exhibition is presented for the Auckland Festival of Photography.
