Children brought to Christ = Ka mau-ria nga ta-ma-ri-ki ki te ka-rai-ti

documentary heritage
  • Description

Early 19th century printed teaching aid, in M?ori, to assist with learning to read. Text from Matthew 19:13-15 broken into syllables, for use in mission schools.

According to Williams, this is one of two lesson sheets, published probably before the date of the Mission Press.

"From similarities in type and paper with Williams 12/iii (Morning prayer and Evening prayer, in English) that have the Jones colophon, this poster was almost certainly also printed by William Jones, of 10 Bridge Street, Sydney. The date is uncertain, and that in Williams has been followed for lack of other evidence. It is possible that was printed in 1840 for the Wesleyan missionary James Watkin, in the first South Island mission at Waikouaiti, but this cannot be confirmed."
