Clutha Nantes MacKenzie (service no.: 11/171) embarked on the Main Body from Wellington in October 1914. He was part of the Wellington Mounted Rifles and was blinded at Gallipoli, after Chunuk Bair.

On return to New Zealand, MacKenzie was a Member of Parliament from 1920-1922 and Director of the Blind Institute (Auckland) from 1923-1938. He was awarded the Knight Bachelor, in 1935, for services to the blind.
Clutha MacKenzie’s father was Sir Thomas Noble MacKenzie; New Zealand High Commissioner in London from 1912 – 1920. He is mentioned in Volume II of the diary – as part of a delegation to Egypt.
