Provenance: Campbell's original correspondence was formerly in the possession of Mrs W.B. Aitken's grandfather's cousin, who later gifted them to her [Ref. MUS-2003-85, 'Mrs W.B Aitken to Auckland War Memorial Museum, dated 26 February 1970']. However, the existence of a typed transcript of the letters indicates that they have at different times been passed around various family members [Ref. MUS-2003-76, 'Enid A. Evans, Librarian, Auckland Museum Library, to Mrs Percy Smith', 1961-62].
  • Subject Notes
Alexander Campbell, a banker from Scotland, emigrated to New Zealand in 1859 and settled at Matakana, first with P.W. Croker, and then on his own land, where he lived until his death in 1905, having been a teacher there from 1865, and then from 1870, the first headmaster of Warkworth (Mahurangi) School. He was a representative of the settlers on deputations to Sir George Grey during the New Zealand Wars and was closely involved with the Presbyterian Church and all community activities, of which he gives lively accounts in his monthly epistles home.
