William Colenso was a printer, missionary, explorer, naturalist and politician who arrived in New Zealand in 1835. He printed the Epistle of the Maori New Testament and the first NZ Government Gazette. At the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi his cautious representations to Hobson that many Maori were unaware of the meaning of the Treaty were set aside.
