documentary heritage
  • Description

In a draft letter written to the Editor of 'The New Zealand Herald', dated 21 March 1930, George Graham relates the history of Wairaka, daughter of Toroa, both of the "Mataatua" canoe, who "'came North' with her family retainers & settled with kindred at Mt. Albert (formerly called 'Oruarangi').

Here she became a recognised leader & foundress of a tribe known as Ngati-Wai whose territorial Rights comprised that part of the Isthmus from the Manukau to the Waitemata shores - extending also to comprise the Northern shores of the Waitemata from Oruamo (Hellyers Creek) to the North Head."
