Letter from Mr. G Laurenson to Mrs Amey Daldy, August 11, 1904

documentary heritage
  • Description

Regarding the Women's Political League's condemnation of his Divorce Bill. Mr Laurneson wrote that the current law allowed for the dissolution of a marriage under circumstances of adultery, drunkenness, desertion (longer than five years), and penal servitude for domestic violence (for over 7 years). While his new Bill proposed that confinement in an asylum should also be grounds for divorce.

He asked Mrs Daldy to read testimonials, of which he included two, from women who had been tied to their husbands despite their extended confinement, and implored Mrs Daldy to consider his proposal reasonable.
