    On the last page (page 4) Baker makes the following remark: "The Treaty of Waitangi I remember had a narrow escape at the burning of the Public Offices at Auckland in 1841. I was then Clk. [Clerk] of Records in the Col. Secs. Off. [Colonial Secretary's Office] and I arrived at the fire just in time to save that and the Seal of the Colony from being burned and carried them to Felton Mathew's house (subsequently where Col. Wynyard lived).

    I afterwards fastened the different copies of the Treaty together and put them into the iron safe in the Col. Secs. off in which they have been kept ever since".
