Subject Notes
Charles Baker (1803-1875) joined the Church Missionary Society Mission at the Bay of Islands in 1828, and was stationed at Kerkeri, Paihia, Waikare, Tolaga Bay, Waiapu, and Tauranga before retiring to Auckland in 1865. Baker was instrumental in the building of the first timber church at Kororareka, Russell, which is now the oldest in New Zealand. He also worked alongside Henry Williams in his endeavour to protect Maori from lawless Europeans and their fraudulent dealings.
