Excerpt from the text of Item 1 reads: "... you are hereby called upon to give the most unqualified contradiction to this report - which is as false as it is malicious - and this you will not only do in English to me, but you will be pleased to address a Copy of the same in Maori to the Chiefs Kawiti and Heke enclosing me a Copy thereof in Maori."

Colonel Cyprian Bridge (1807-1885) arrived in New Zealand in 1845 as a Major serving with the 58th Regiment. He took part in the battles of Puketutu (May 1845), Ohaeawai (July 1845), Ruapekapeka (Jan. 1846), and the action at Kapotai Pa (1845). He left New Zealand with the 58th Regiment in 1858 and was appointed to command the Regiment.
