    Letter from Major Cyprian Bridge to Archdeacon Henry Williams, undated [April 1848?], regarding the accusations and rumours that Bridge was insulted by Hone Heke when he visited the Chief in Waimate. Heke reportedly asked Bridge to remove his pipe from his mouth.

    Includes a draft written by Williams to Bridge on the inner fold of the Bridge's letter and dated April 1848, Paihia, acknowledging Williams' awareness of the remark made by Hone Heke and considered it 'proof of the extraordinary free & easy manner of Heke'.

    Colonel Cyprian Bridge (1807-1885) arrived in New Zealand in 1845 as a Major serving with the 58th Regiment. He took part in the battles of Puketutu (May 1845), Ohaeawai (July 1845), Ruapekapeka (Jan. 1846), and the action at Kapotai Pa (1845). He left New Zealand with the 58th Regiment in 1858 and was appointed to command the Regiment.
