    Containing eight questions regarding early missionaries, their families, their livelihood, Cattle, the Governor of New South Wales, Land claims, the Bishop of New Zealand, and the forwarding of correspondence. Following these questions are two letters. The first, dated July 6, is in regard to Archdeacon Henry Williams land claims at Pakaraka and how far he wished to take the case in court. The second letter, to 'Lucy' [possibly Lucy Frances Williams b.

    1868] dated September 13, 1847, is in regard to Williams pledge and whether it was drawn up by the Bishop, the Governor, or the Committee.

    It is unknown for whom this letter was intended, those who created the inventory believe it to be from Hugh Francis Carleton to Archdeacon Henry Williams, probably in order that he might wright his pamphlet "A Page from the History of New Zealand" accurately.

    Hugh Francis Carleton (1810-1890) was a trader, newspaper editor, politician, writer and societal critic, married to Lydia Jane Williams, daughter of Archdeacon Henry Williams. Carleton contributed many publications on the history of New Zealand, including A Page from the History of New Zealand under the penname Metoikos, in which he defended Henry Williams against the charges brought against him by Governor Grey. His most famous work is the biography of his father in law, The life of Henry Williams, Archdeacon of Waimate.
