Subject Notes
Lydia Jane Carleton (nee Williams 1834 - 1891) was the tenth child of Archdeacon Henry and Marianne Williams. Lydia was born at Paihia in 1834, eleven years after her missionary parents immigrated to New Zealand. In 1859, she married Hugh Francis Carleton, a writer who penned a defence of her father under the pseudonym Metiokos. She was actively involved in the church and played the organ.
