    Regarding the death of her husband Hugh Francis Carleton. Excerpt from the text reads "Hugo passed away very peacefully at 9 o'clock in the evening on July 14th. The immediate cause of death was obstruction of the bowels" Lydia goes on to write of the plans for his funeral.

    Lydia Jane Carleton (nee Williams 1834 - 1891) was the tenth child of Archdeacon Henry and Marianne Williams. Lydia was born at Paihia in 1834, eleven years after her missionary parents immigrated to New Zealand. In 1859, she married Hugh Francis Carleton, a writer who penned a defence of her father under the pseudonym Metiokos. She was actively involved in the church and played the organ.
