Davis also mentions the improved health of Hone Heke - "Heke is I hear better, but I have not seen him now for 10 days - when I saw him his lungs appeared to be affected." Davis also reminds Williams that another chief "Mate" was awaiting a response to his letter.

    Richard Davis arrived at Waimate North in 1831. He was a prolific writer and observer of the natural environment. His diaries of weather and temperature have provided insightful information for modern meteorologists. Davis died in 1863 and is buried in the cemetery of the Waimate Mission House.
