Subject Notes
Reverend John Hobbs (1800-1883) immigrated to New Zealand alongside Henry Williams, sailing on the Brampton from Sydney in 1823. After just a few years in New Zealand he returned to Sydney where he married Jane Broggref, and was ordained. In 1827, he again returned, landing at Hokianga Harbour in order to re-establish the Wesleyan Mission. Later, the Hobbs family sailed for Tonga where they spent five years. Hobbs was a skilful linguist, and communicated freely with such influential Maori as Tamati Waka Nene and Hika Tawa. He worked as a translator for William Hobson during the Mangungu signing of the Treaty of Waitangi.
