Subject Notes
James Kemp (1790-1860) a blacksmith by trade served the Church Missionary Society in New Zealand from 1819 - 1872. He and his wife, Charlotte Kemp (nee Butcher) co-founded with other missionaries the Kerikeri mission station, which they maintained through the tumultuous musket wars. The pair both taught in Maori boys, girls, and adults schools. They were the last missionaries remaining in Kerikeri after 1840, despite the conflict between Northern Maori and British Troops following the felling of the Flagstaff at Kororareka. Their station eventually closed in 1848.
